Why is this relevant? India’s food market is one of the largest in the world, and also among the most protected by regulation. For a Russian business to enter the Indian food market is rare—even more so when the imported product is a key ingredient in the local cuisine.
This year, Kalina Farm in Kaliningrad Region harvested 900 tonnes of caraway, which is currently being sorted and processed.
According to Sergey Chechulin, the farm’s founder, around 350–400 tonnes are destined for the Russian market, while a small fraction will go to Belarus. The rest of the crop is intended for export to China and India.
Having started a few years ago, commercial caraway cultivation in the region now takes place over an area of more than one thousand hectares.
